Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8: Based on George Floyd Protests

Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg who plays detective Jake Peralta in the series addressed the release of season 8 and told people about its follow up. “The writers are rethinking how we’re going to move forward,” he said.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American comedy television series created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur. The creators of the show uniquely added comedy in a police station, and the idea got accepted by Universal Television. Initially, the season was packed to air a total of thirteen episodes, which later got extended to 22 episodes. Also, the series got canceled after its fifth season, that managed to resume after a while.
It is all about detective Jake who has an ongoing conflict with his new commanding officer. The series won several awards and gained a lot of popularity due to its humorous story. The show started in September 2013 and now the announcement about season 8 has been made. A post was shared from the official Instagram account announcing the return of season 8 expected to be aired in 2021.
Andy Samberg says that the show will be based on George Floyd’s death, who was killed in police custody. Later, the protests took place all over the US as the people were marching against the police brutality followed by ‘The Black Lives Matter’ protest. The producers are also thinking to inscribe the worldwide COVID-19 situation.
While the team of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is discussing about bringing forward a new concept, other series like ‘Cops’ canceled future episodes of the show as it had been showcasing aggressive behavior of the cops.
As said earlier, it is an American Sitcom show, and shifting focus from comedy to a very series incident is challenging. The makers of the show wanted to add a pinch of goofiness to preserve the originality and bring out the likable heroes. Though it has talked about incidences like ‘MeToo Moment’ in season 6, Floyd’s incident is a whole new level for the show.
Co-star Terry Crews said that the first four episodes were ready to go, but the idea dropped last moment and there is no definite direction to follow. Therefore, the plans will take place from scratch. The crew of the show also added that they want to create something ground-breaking that turns out to be a topic of discussion.
