Backup Your iPhone Photos to Google Photos for Free

If you’re a selfie freak, it is hard to manage a backup using iCloud as it only offers you 5GB of free space. Of course, paying for the iCloud storage is a convenient option to back-up your data, but why pay when you can do it for free. Looking for a solution to the same without having to pay for additional iCloud space?

Fortunately, Google Photos has your back! iCloud Photos is not the only option to save a backup for your pictures and other media. Instead, Google Photos is an amazing alternate that offers you unlimited space, that too without charging you a single penny.

Below is a guide on creating a backup for media stored in your iPhone using Google Photos.

Backing up iPhone Photos to Google Photos

Note: Before starting, note that it is essential to have a Google account.

The steps to take advantage of the unlimited free space by Google Photos are:

  1. Go to the ‘App Store’ on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Search for ‘Google Photos’ in the search bar and open the result.
  3. Hit the ‘Install’ button and open the application once installed.
  4. When you open the app, you’ll be prompted to log in with a Google account. Click on the ‘Sign in’ button.
  5. Enter the ID and password of your Google account and sign in.
  6. The main window will open asking you to perform a backup. Click on the ‘Back up as’ button to start the process of backing up your media from the iPhone.
  7. Next, hit the ‘High Quality’ option and click ‘Confirm’ to continue.

This is it! These are the simple steps to follow for backing up your data to Google Photos. Now, you can back up other apps on your iCloud without any fear of losing your media.

Though Google Photos offers you unlimited storage, it’ll compress all the photos and videos before uploading the same to the cloud. You may face degradation in the quality of the images because of the same.

For instance, if you opt for the ‘High Quality’ option, a 16MB image will be compressed to 2MB. Not only this, but Google also downsizes higher image resolution.

In case you want to keep the images at its original size and resolution, you may use a 15GB free tier offered by Google, which is still much more than provided by iCloud. Also, the storage space can be shared across Google Drive, Gmail, etc.  For additional space, you can pay Google for the same.
