Beauty and the Beast’ and Other Blockbusters Make a Comeback in the Box Office

With all the theatres and multiplexes closed, some of the old blockbusters have started to regain popularity among the drive-ins and other alternative screenings. The movies that are seeing the limelight again are Beauty and the Beast, Iron Man, Bohemian Rhapsody, Jurassic Park, and Goonies. These movies have made it to the top 5 positions and in that very order. The regained popularity of these films is mainly owed to the recent surge in the use of drive-in theatres, particularly in the United States.

There are many movies that have made a comeback with the drive-ins. However, the above-mentioned titles have generated the most revenue in the last few days.
Beauty and the Beast
The story is built around the classic concept of how seeking out the beauty in a seemingly rough exterior can prove to be quite transformative. This concept has been portrayed in this movie, and in various other fairy tales, quite literally. In the movie concerned, this transformation has been brought about by love.
So what is it about this movie that makes it so popular among the viewers despite how predictable and overused its storyline is? Well, I guess the answer lies in the fact that a classic is considered so for a reason. Give your old classic a modern twist, add a pinch of glitter and voila! You have yourself yet another winner. Or rather the same old one with improved graphics. This Disney film starring Emma Watson was released in March of 2017. It topped the charts then and seems to be repeating history yet again with its drive-in screenings in the United States.
Iron Man
Now, who can resist seeing Robert Downey Jr in action again? Marvel Studios’ 2008 production of Iron Man pulls in the right after Beauty and the Beast in terms of the revenue generated this week. When you think about it, there had to be a Marvel production in the movie line up. It gives it’s viewers an experience like no other with its action-packed scenes that also deliver a punch of humor.
Bohemian Rhapsody
Coming in third this week, the 2018 film based on the life of the lead singer on Queen, Freddie Mercury, has seen quite a few screenings. The movie is a fresh attempt in re-telling a controversial tale. The character of Freddie Mercury seems to outshine his music in the film. The biopic has been largely critiqued for focusing more on Freddie’s sexuality than any other aspect of his life. That, however, still gives the viewers something strong to hold on to.
Jurassic Park
This thrilling film with it’s Academy Award-winning special effects is bound to make a great watch for a drive-in. Given the current circumstances, everyone is looking to find an escape into a different world, and this dinosaur filled amusement park will do just that. It is a classic that can be found in everyone’s home theatre collection, so the fact that it comes in fourth at the drive-in’s this week is no surprise.
Goonies
The Goonies is a 1985 production set in a coastal town in the Pacific. Local kids land upon a treasure map, which leads them to embark on a journey into a restaurant’s basement. The movie sports all the classic scenes and adventures that one would expect from any story that involves a treasure hunt. Apart from the rambunctious adventures, this movie also has a few scenes that will touch your emotional side. All in all, this is yet another classic that completely deserves the viewership that it is receiving.
Apart from the five mentioned above, Relic, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Most Wanted, and Jaws (of course!) complete the top ten most viewed list for the week. With the reopening of all the major multiplexes postponed, this seems to be the way that things are going to be for quite some time to come. Given the grosses that the drive-ins have been generating, viewing these classics stretched out in the backseat of your car doesn’t seem all that bad, does it?
